Northwest Portland location now open; several more planned
MULTNOMAH - Multnomah Village mainstay Sweets Etc. is taking its show on the road with one new location already open and more on the horizon.
NW Sweets, located at 740 N.W. 23rd Ave., is now open, Sweets Etc. owner Tricia Leahy said, and another new shop is tentatively planned for Northeast Fremont Street in the Beaumont Village area that she hopes will open this summer.
'We chose these locations because they are in vibrant, walkable Portland neighborhoods with strong community support,' Leahy said.
And each candy shop is tailored to its neighborhood.
For example, Leahy said, NW Sweets has a few more gift items and a selection of Oregon-branded treats for travelers looking to pick up an edible souvenir or gift. It also features a selection of premium imported chocolate bars and truffles. A party area is planned for the Northeast location.
Like its original Multnomah Village, each shop will carry Sweets Etc.'s signature wall of bulk jars, its handmade fudge, Umpqua ice cream, licorice and truffles and a selection of novelty and nostalgic candy, as well as seasonal treats.
'We've had the expansion plan in mind for quite a while,' Leahy said.'A lot of things all fell into place within the last eight months with staffing, available retail spaces and a renewed interested in main street areas within the city.'
She said Sweets Etc. was affected by the economic recession only in that it had to rethink some of its product selections.
'Business has remained strong for us over the past 10 years,' she said. 'With our planning and resources, we felt it was the right time to bring the neighborhood candy shops back to Portland neighborhoods.'
Once its Northwest and Northeast Portland locations are running smoothly, Leahy said Sweets Etc. plans to open four additional stores.
