Free skate day held to celebrate

The Lake Oswego Youth Action Council unveiled a permanent art installation at the city skate park on National Skate Day, June 21.

The three murals resulted from four weeks of work, totaling 40 hours per mural. Students from both Lake Oswego and Lakeridge high schools received volunteer hour credits for their efforts, though LOHS student volunteer Chase Jutzi said that, "At first I did it for the hours, and then I did it for the painting."

Students were guided by Cydny Winslow, teen and youth program coordinator for Lake Oswego Parks and Recreation. Winslow worked closely with skate park coordinator Chris Hancock on the location of the murals. by: VERN UYETAKE - From left, Makenzie Reed, Chase Jutzi, Lacey Doby, Cydny Winslow and Becca Hokinson were present for the unveiling of the mural they worked on.

Directly before the murals were unveiled, Hancock said that his only requirement entering into the project was that the murals be "really bright and colorful," a requirement which the murals fully met.

Winslow was assisted by recent Lake Oswego High School graduate MaKenzie Reed, who works at the teen lounge teaching Thursday evening art classes to middle schoolers. Reed was enthusiastic about the project and said, "The murals were really fun to do. I think they add a lot to the skate park," and that, "It was worth the effort." by: VERN UYETAKE - Skate Park Coordinator Chris Hancock announces winners of prizes.

To celebrate, the park hosted a free skate day with a live DJ, refreshments and raffle prizes.

Droves of local youth turned out to the mural unveiling, all of whom were excited to see the new artwork and enjoy a day of free skating.

Oak Creek Elementary student Max Bowden, 9, said, "I like how they're colorful and have lots of detail."

His views were echoed by 12-year-old Waluga student Mark Moghadam, who said, "I think they pop."
