Indians knot score midway through first half, but can't find net rest of way

The Scappoose High boys soccer team lost at Roosevelt in the season opener last week, 3-1.

Roosevelt scored the first goal of the match, but Scappoose tied it up in the 24th minute on a goal by Devon Timmons. Asa Flanagan had an assist.

“We did pretty well,” Coach Scott Stanton said. “We have some defensive things to work on.”

Flanagan said Roosevelt’s first goal in the match was something of a miracle shot from 35 yards out, just over the reach of the goalie and dropping in behind him.

“I’m already getting e-mails from parents saying we had more shots on goal in that match than we had all last season,” Stanton noted.

He wasn’t sure of the exact total, but said it was around 18. They only had three corner kicks, though.

Roosevelt scored twice after Scappoose in the first half, and neither team scored in the second half.

The Indians are at Gladstone this Thursday and then have a killer week with their home matches. The go up against Molalla on Tuesday and Oregon Episcopal School on Thursday. Molalla is the defending state champs and lost just two players from their team. OES also made the 3A/2A/1A state playoffs, but lost in the first round.
