Lady Lions volleyball team tops Milwaukie, Wilsonville

by: JOHN BREWINGTON - St. Helens' Kali Moore digs out a serve during last week's NWOC volleyball match with Milwaukie. The St. Helens Lady Lions volleyball team has kept themselves at the top of Northwest Oregon Conference standings with four wins in four matches against league teams.

Last week, St. Helens beat Milwaukie in four games, and then downed Wilsonville in three. Those victories left the Lady Lions tied with Sherwood and Liberty, all at 4-0 thus far.

That deadlock should be broken this week as Liberty and Sherwood play Tuesday, with St. Helens at Liberty Thursday night. The Lady Lions take on Sherwood next Tuesday in St. Helens.

“We have had a great start of the season,” Coach Tom Ray said. “Players are focused and ready to take on anyone on the other side of the net.”

St. Helens cruised to a 25-12 win in their first game with Milwaukie, then held on for a 25-22 win. They had several chances to win the third game and end the match, but fell 29-31. They finished off the visiting Mustangs 25-13 in the fourth game.

In that match, Gabby Susee had 15 attack kills and seven block kills. Taylor Albertson had 10 attack kills and four block kills. Jillian Ross was 22 of 24 serving (92 percent) and Megan Thompson was 100 percent passing and digging.

“Jillian provided great team leadership and setting,” Ray said.

St. Helens had few problems at Wilsonville, a team now 0-4 in league play. They posted a 25-16, 25-14, 25-22 win.

Kali Moore was 11 for 11 serving with four aces and three attack kills. Kyle Reinholdt was 20 for 20 serving with five aces. Ocean Jabonek had three attack kills and one block kill.

“Kylie had excellent setting for our hitters,” Ray noted.

“I do understand that Liberty and Sherwood are coming up. Those two matches should be exciting,” Ray noted. “If we play like we are capable we should be successful.”
