Sole Support walks for Parkinson’s Resources of Oregon were held earlier this month in Medford, Eugene, Portland and for the first time in Vancouver, Wash. These awareness and fundraising events bring people together to walk in support of those with Parkinson’s disease.

The funds raised are reinvested into local programs and services for those impacted with Parkinson’s disease in Oregon and southwest Washington.

Helping out at the inaugural walk in Vancouver were Kelsey Henne, Lindsey Stern, Alissya Yuen and Cheyenne Robles, all eighth grade students at Lake Oswego Junior High School.

The girls dispensed water to walkers and dogs at the halfway point and passed out pedometers and reflectors for Health Net of Oregon, one of the sponsors of the walk.

“It’s lots of fun to volunteer in general and we wanted to help,” said Cheyenne Robles, whose father works for Health Net. She had enlisted her friends to help at other Health Net sponsored events, but this was the first time they had volunteered at a Sole Support walk.

“We wanted to help because it’s kind of a big deal,” said Alissya Yuen, whose father is a doctor. “We should help others. I know a lot of people who have gone through a disease like that ... it’s kind of hard and difficult for them so we want to do what we can to help out. Families with disease go through so much.”

“From a parent’s perspective, I have to say that our community really has fostered the responsibility of volunteering,” said Jennifer Robles, Cheyenne’s mother. “Every time we’ve asked for help for projects, Cheyenne has always been able to round up friends to help — girls and boys. That really speaks highly of what is important to our kids.”

Parkinson’s Resources of Oregon is based in Lake Oswego.
