NEXT GAME: California (5-3, 2-2

Pac-10) at Oregon State (4-3, 0-3), 1 p.m. Saturday, Reser Stadium. Radio: KEX (1190 AM). TV: None.

ON THE BEARS: Under rookie coach Jeff Tedford, Cal has won more games this year than it did the previous two seasons combined (four). The Bears beat UCLA 17-12 Saturday despite only 173 yards total offense, with the defense providing a spectacular goal-line stand at game's end. Cal is last in the Pac-10 in total offense (352.9 yards) and total defense (388.8) but is third in scoring offense (36.0).

ON THE BEAVERS: Oregon State ranks second defensively in the Pac-10, but the offense has floundered lately. The offensive line must move bodies to create space for Steven Jackson, who still ranks second in the Pac-10 in rushing.
