Scent your home for the holidays

Celebrate all five senses this holiday season within the comforts of your home. While traditional holiday meals, twinkle lights, cozy blankets and carols celebrate four senses — candles are a great way to scent your home and appeal to the fifth sense for the holidays.

“Fragrances help your home have a little more of a holiday feel,” said Kris Olson, owner of Dragonfly Greetings & Gifts in West Linn. “I think fragrances bring back memories of different holiday traditions and may remind people of years past.”

Dragonfly Greetings and Gifts offers a variety of candles, reed diffusers and body products in traditional holiday scents. The store also offers battery-powered tea lights and votives and unscented tapers in various holiday colors for the dinner table.

Olson said Thymes brand frasier fir candles and body products are most popular this time of year. The frasier fir scent comes in three different candle sizes, a home fragrance mist, diffuser oil, hand soap, lotion and home cleaning spray.

“It smells like a real fir, traditional Christmas tree,” she said. “It’s a great scent for people who have an artificial tree but want the real traditional smell.”

The local boutique also offers a variety of holiday scents from Root candle company. The candles come in pillars or glass jars and in a variety of sizes, including votives and 22-ounce jars.

Holiday scents include dark green bayberry-scented candles, red hollyberry-scented candles, red candy cane-scented candles, cream spiced gumdrops-scented candles, maroon cranberry-scented candles and cream sparkling cranberry-scented candles.

“My favorite has always been bayberry,” Olson said. “It reminds me of something when I was growing up, a fragrance that my mom had.”

Olson tends to burn one scent per room, however she said some people enjoy blending or layering compatible scents. The amount of candles required to fill an entire room depends on personal preference and the size of the space, she added. The boutique also offers candle guides for customers, which explain burn time for different size candles and basic information about trimming wicks.
