Attend a winter solstice party

The public is invited to celebrate the changing of seasons with stories about the winter solstice from cultures around the world Dec. 20 from 4 to 6 p.m. Participants will learn the science behind the solstice, drink cider from a Dutch oven and explore the forest during an evening guided walk.

Attend a community sing-a-long

Take part in a holiday community sing-a-along Dec. 22 at 7 p.m. Large print lyrics will be handed out so everyone can participate. There will be a practice before this concert for any guitar players who want to participate.

Hot chocolate and cider will be served. Bring some cookies to share.

Attend Christmas celebrations

The West Linn Lutheran Church will host “Come Home for Christmas” Dec. 24 starting at 4 p.m. The event will kick off with a children and familiy service featuring “The Story of Christmas” with Christmas carols and candlelight.

Youth-led carols will begin at 6 p.m. followed by a performance from Celtic Christmas featuring Beccon at 9 p.m. Classical Christmas music will continue at 11 p.m.

Music in the stacks concert

Listen to a concert featuring Carley Baer Jan. 16 at 6:30 p.m. Baer is a Milwaukie native who has spent the last six years in Portland honing her musical craft.

No matter where she travels, she brings a little of the Northwestern attitude with her in her smiley demeanor, her dainty dreadlocks and the effervescent delivery of her original material.

Attend the discovery music series

Listen to 3 Leg Torso on Dec. 29 at 9 a.m. at the Press Club. The concert will feature the Meesters with guests Greg Ewer, from the Oregon Symphony, and Michael Papillo on bass. This will be the second concert in the series which celebrates collaboration between northwest musicians.

Attend Eve on the Lake

Take part in Lake Oswego’s first annual New Year’s Eve celebration Dec. 31 from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m. The event will feature hors d’oeuvres, dancing, live events by Team Entertainment, photo booths, midnight champagne toasts and more. Tickets are $59 and $69 after Dec. 24. All proceeds will benefit the American Red Cross Hurricane Sandy relief efforts.

Watch the ‘Grand Hotel’

Lakewood Theatre Company will produce the “Grand Hotel” Jan. 11 through Feb. 17, Thursday through Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m.

The production is based off the novel by Vicki Baum and subsequent MGM feature film. The play will be directed by Bruce Blanchard. Music and lyrics are by Robert Wright and George Forrest. The production is set in 1928 and based at the Grand Hotel Berlin.

The play attempts to capture the cultural optimism between World Wars and the high life of Berlin. The hotel brings together rich characters — both wealthy and poor — where one life ends while another begins, and one heart breaks while another beats faster.
