Forest Grove girls establish new marks in all three relay events against Hilhi
The Forest Grove girls swim team had a banner day on Dec. 13, winning all eight individual events in a dominant 107-65 victory over Hillsboro, but it was the Lady Vikings three relay teams that really stole the spotlight.
The A relay team of Vera Hutchison, Alondra Martinez, Oriene Shiel and Prudence Rooker broke two school records that had stood since the mid-1970s, and the B relay team of Rachael Van Loo, Madi Vanderzanden, Chelsea Christison and Jasmine Vandomelen broke another school record.
The team of Hutchison, Martinez, Shiel and Rooker opened the meet with a record-setting performance in the 200-yard medley relay, posting a time of 1:54.63 to break the old mark of 1:56.60 set in 1977.
That relay group also ended the meet with a blistering time of 3:45.09 in the 400-yard freestyle relay, smashing the previous record of 3:52.91, which was established in 1975.
The other record that fell was the two-year-old mark of 1:45.39 in the 200 free relay. The team of Van Loo, Vanderzanden, Christison and Vandomelen took first place in 1:39.21.
Those were hardly the only highlights for Forest Grove, which won all 11 events in the girls meet against Hillsboro, and 9 of 11 in the boys meet.
Hutchison won both the 200 and 500 freestyle events, while Martinez and Rooker were also two-time winners.
Martinez won the 100 butterfly in 1:03.83 and also took first place in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:06.67. Rooker was victorious in both the 200 individual medley (2:11.03) and 100 breaststroke (1:08.11).
Hutchison won the 200 free by 10 seconds, posting a time of 2:03.29, and she added a victory in the 500 free by nearly half a minute, winning in 5:34.06.
Other Forest Grove girls winners included Shiel in the 100 freestyle (56.48) and Jessica Bohms in the 50 free (25.43).
On the boys side, Forest Grove won every event except the 100 backstroke and the 200 freestyle relay, paving the way for a 100-67 team victory.
Viking seniors Tim Sandage, Owen Shiel and Charles Morse were all two-time winners, and they also paired with fellow senior August Peverly to win a pair of relay events.
Sandage won the 200 individual medley in 2:03.19 and also captured first place in the 100 freestyle (50.18). Shiel took first in the 100 butterfly (58.33) and 500 freestyle (5:13.58), while Morse finished first in both the 100 breaststroke (1:07.56) and 200 free (1:51.69).
Joined by Peverly, that group added victories in the 200 medley relay (1:45.33) and 400 freestyle relay (3:26.40).
Jonathan Faris added an individual victory in the 50 free with a time of 24.77.
The Vikings didnt have quite as much luck last week, dropping a dual meet to Pacific Conference rival McMinnville.
The Forest Grove boys won four individual events and two relays, but succumbed to the Grizzlies superior depth in a 94-76 loss. The Lady Vikings won 9 of the 11 events, but still came out on the wrong end of an 86-83 decision.
