Football: Tigard moves to 3-0 with its 42-20 road victory

HILLSBORO - The Tigard High football team carried its red-hot, early-season start right into Pacific Conference play.

The Tigers, after opening the season with impressive non-league victories over Southridge and Grant, began their Pacific Conference schedule by rolling to a 42-20 win over Century in a game played Friday at Hillsboro Stadium.

With the league-opening victory, Tigard moved to 3-0 on the season. The Jaguars dropped to 2-1 on the season.

The Tigers got off to a fast start in Friday's game. They took a 7-0 lead when junior receiver Anthony Consolo caught a 17-yard touchdown pass from junior quarterback Sam Stelk coming with 6 minutes and 2 seconds left in the first quarter.

Tigard senior defensive back Sean McGetrick helped set up the initial touchdown of the game when he intercepted a Century pass and returned the ball 32 yards to the Jaguar 38-yard line. Consolo and Stelk connected for the touchdown just three plays later.

The Tigers upped their lead to 14-0 when junior running back Benny Wick scored on a 1-yard run on the first play of the second quarter.

Century trimmed the lead to 14-6 when junior Xavier Mitchell pulled in an 8-yard touchdown pass from junior quarterback Sam Riddle with 8:53 left in the second quarter.

But Tigard answered with a 36-yard TD pass play from senior quarterback Niko Freni to senior receiver Brandon Wick coming with 1:33 remaining before halftime.

The touchdown, along with Travis Hale's extra-point kick, gave the Tigers a 21-6 advantage at the intermission.

Tigard wasted little time adding onto that lead in the second half. On the first play from scrimmage in the third quarter, Riddle was sacked and fumbled the football. Brandon Wick recovered the loose ball at the Century 8-yard line.

Benny Wick scored on a run on the very next play, upping the Tiger lead to 28-6 with 11:40 left in the third quarter.

Tigard junior running back Zach Floyd added a 6-yard touchdown run on the first play of the fourth quarter, giving the Tigers a 35-6 cushion.

Century made the score 35-12 when junior Josh Wise scored on a 5-yard run with 8:35 left in the game.

With 3:41 left to play, Freni and junior receiver Chance Taylor teamed up for a 31-yard touchdown pass play, upping the lead to 42-12. A late touchdown catch by Mitchell made the final 42-20.

Tigard, as a team, rushed for 334 yards on 43 carries in the victory. Benny Wick led a balanced rushing attack with 118 yards on 13 carries. Floyd added 113 yards on 16 carries and junior Kaz Greene had 83 yards on seven carries.

Freni completed four of 11 pass attempts for 93 yards. Stelk completed four of 12 passes for 51 yards. Taylor had two receptions for 42 yards.

For the Tigard defense, Benny Wick was in on two quarterback sacks and he also had a fumble recovery, as did Brandon Wick. Taylor was in on a sack. Stelk and senior Jarrad Schulte each had a pair of tackles for losses.

Tigard will be back in action Friday when it faces Glencoe in a Pacific Conference game starting at 7 p.m. at Tigard High.
