A 48-year-old Eugene woman died early Friday morning after her car crashed through the seawall in Tom McCall Waterfront Park and plunged into the Willamette River.

Portland police said Lynne M. Salvi died in the accident.

Police and the Portland Fire and Rescue dive team responded to the scene near the Salmon Street Fountain around 3 a.m. Sept. 16. Divers found the driver inside the car at about 3:27 a.m. They pulled her to the surface, but efforts to revive her were unsuccessful and she died at the scene at about 3:41 a.m.

Police said the car was traveling east on Southwest Salmon Street and for some reason went over the Salmon Street Fountain, smashed through the seawall and plunged into the Willamette River.

Portland city crews temporarily shored up the seawall.
