Historical Society plans ice cream social

> The Jefferson County Historical Society will hold its 2012 annual meeting and ice cream social on Sunday, Sept. 30, starting at 1:30 p.m., in the Jefferson County Senior Center at 860 S.W. Madison, Madras.
All JCHS members, friends and family are invited to attend.
The program will include election of new and continuing JCHS directors, and brief updates on the doings of the historical society.
In particular, there will be detail on the ongoing work to inventory and move the museum collection to temporary storage at Westside School.
As soon as renovations at Westside are completed, the museum will reopen in a new format in the Westside Library, as part of "Westside Community Center."
Also on the Sept. 30 program are presentations by the winner of the 2012 Historical Society prize for the Madras Middle School "History Day" competition, Carly Breach (on notable Oregon shipwrecks), and by author Steve Lent, whose pictorial history of Madras was published recently.
Copies of this must-have book will be available for sale, along with Lent's 2010 book, "Place Names of Jefferson County," and he will be available to autograph copies of both books.
Guests at the annual meeting and ice cream social will be treated to ice cream sundaes, with a variety of toppings, and good end-of-the-summer visiting with friends.
