The Christmas season is fast approaching, and Santa's helpers are already busy.

The Boring Fire and Rescue District manages the Christmas Basket and Giving Tree programs for the communities of Boring and Damascus.

Christmas baskets

Baskets are delivered to more than 100 qualifying families each year. The baskets include a Christmas dinner and gifts for each child in the home. Dinner includes canned and dried goods, bread and turkey - enough for several meals in most cases.

The program continues each year with local residents and businesses donating food and gifts for the Christmas baskets as well as cash to buy fresh or frozen food and special gifts for unique needs.

Most canned goods are received from local students, who have canned food drives in the schools. Last year, students collected more than 22,000 cans of food. This year's winning class in each school will enjoy a pizza party, sponsored by volunteer firefighters.

To donate, stop at the Boring Fire Station, 28655 Highway 212, or mail donations to Boring Volunteer Firefighters Association, Boring Fire District, P.O. Box 85, Boring, 97009.

Local families, with identification, may apply for a Christmas basket 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday through Friday at the Boring Fire District, 28655 Highway 212.
