Sonja N. Patzer

Feb. 19, 1942–July 19, 2013

Sonja Nettie Patzer of Woodburn died at the age of 71 on July 19, 2013, after a very courageous battle with a long-term illness.  She was born Feb. 19, 1942, in Ryder, N.D., to Oscar and Alice (Jandera) SUBMITTED - Sonja Patzer

Sonja graduated from North Salem High School. She also attended Portland State University and received a bachelor’s degree in sociology. Sonja was employed at Portland State University for 17.5 years before retiring. She was affiliated with Woodburn Eagles Lodge. Sonja enjoyed gardening and spending time with her grandchildren.

Sonja is survived by her long-term partner, James Gowdy of Woodburn; daughters Tanya Jean Andersen of Tualatin and Tyrene Jill Dailey of Salem; brothers Oscar Lewis Vasfaret of Sweet Home and Gordon Paul Vasfaret of Glendale, Ariz.; sisters Adeline Carol Blair of Port Orchard, Wash., and Faye Lou Roundtree of Federal Way, Wash.; and five grandchildren.

Private interment at Belle Passi Memorial Mausoleum in Woodburn.

Shirley Roberts

Oct. 7, 1935–June 27, 2013

Shirley Ann Roberts, of Woodburn, was born in Modesto, Calif., and raised on her grandparents’ ranch in Waterford, SUBMITTED - Shirley Roberts

She later moved to Stockton where she lived most of her life and raised three children: Kathleen Maddox Smidt of Woodburn, John DePew of Duvall, Wash., and Carolynne “Dee Dee” DePew of Stockton, Calif.

Shirley passed away suddenly in the hospital on June 27, 2013.

The last 12 years of her life were spent in Oregon with her oldest daughter, Kathleen, son-in-law, Terry Smidt, and granddaughter, Alexis Griffin Smidt.

She enjoyed reading, crocheting, flowers, music, long car rides and talking about her grandfather’s farm.

In addition to her family in Oregon, she is survived by five additional grandchildren: James Parker, Kami Griffin, Todd Pearson, Timothy “T.J.” Pearson and Sophia DePew. She is also survived by brother George E. Roberts of Juneau, Alaska, and sister Dorritt Whitemore of Santa Rosa, Calif. Shirley was also proud to be a great-grandmother of 14.

Shirley went back to school to become a CNA and continued to care for others for another 20 years. She retired early due to knee issues. She had both knees replaced and later lost one leg due to an unrelated blood infection. After recovering from the amputation and learning how to walk again, her spirits soared and she made new friends. For a short time she lived with them in an assisted living facility nearby.

A celebration of life/memorial will be held in Shirley’s honor on Saturday, Aug. 3 at 1 p.m. at her family’s home in Woodburn. Email This email address is being protected from spambots. Ethel Oliver

April 3, 1918-July 15, 2013

Ethel Rae Oliver, of Woodburn, died at the age of 95 on July 15, 2013 at her residence.

Ethel was born April 3, 1918 in Cleveland, Ohio to Lyman and Carlie (Bates) SUBMITTED - Ethel Oliver

Ethel met Eugene and they married August 1939.

They came to Oregon in 1947, settling in Woodburn in 1991.

She was a member of United Church of God in Hubbard. Her hobbies included drawing and painting.

She is survived by her two sons, Donald James Oliver of Homeland, Calif., and Jack Edward Oliver of Washington; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her husband Eugene, brother Gordon Stevens and sister Ruth Elizabeth Swanson.

Private Interment at Restlawn Memory Gardens in Salem.

Gordon Seely

Sept. 11, 1918-July 20, 2013

Gordon Seely passed away quietly Saturday morning, July 20, 2013 at Country Meadows.

He was born Sept 11, 1918 in the Woodburn area and lived in the Woodburn area all his life.  He married Eva Marie Matthews in 1940 and they had two children, Deanna and Ronald. Eva Marie and Ronald both preceded Gordon in death. He belonged to the Woodburn Christian Church.

He was a farmer most of his life. He also drove a school bus and was head of the transportation department for the Woodburn School District for a period of time.

Survivors include his daughter Deanna, sister Marjorie Pierce, four granddaughters and six great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be at Woodburn Christian Church in Woodburn on Aug. 9 at 1 p.m.

Glen Beckwith

Oct. 30, 1927-July 24, 2013

Glen Eugene Beckwith, of Beaverton, passed away  Wednesday, July 24, 2013, at the age of 85.

Glen was born Oct. 30, 1927, in Payette, Idaho, son of Thurston and Ulva (Schubert) Beckwith.

Glen attended Fruitland High School and then went on to college at SUBMITTED - Glen Beckwith

In November 1947 he married Edith “Louise” Ireland before enlisting with the National Guard in Ontario, Ore. Together they had two children: Bruce and Susan.

He started a long career with Boeing in June of 1955 as an expeditor in aerospace manufacturing until his retirement in December 1989.

He enjoyed camping, fishing, bowling, square dancing, singing in the church choir and wood working. He also enjoyed his family very much and will be deeply missed by all that knew him.

He is survived by his wife Edith “Louise” Beckwith; son Bruce Beckwith; daughter Susan Furwa and brother Carl Beckwith.

A memorial service will be held in his honor on Saturday, Aug. 3 at 1 p.m. at Farmington Square, 14420 S.W. Farmington Road, Beaverton.

The family suggests remembrances be made to the American Cancer Society or the Heart and Lung Association.

Jan. 23, 1928-July 29, 2013

Donald Hagenauer of Woodburn died July 29, 2013. He was born Jan. 23, 1928.

A rosary will be July 31 at 7 p.m. at Simon-Cornwell Colonial Chapel in Woodburn.

A memorial Mass will be Aug. 1 at 11 a.m. at St Luke Catholic Church.

Janice Udey Berkey White

March 20, 1935-July 26, 2013

Janice Louise Udey Berkey White, 78, of Stayton, died at home July 26, 2013.

She was born Janice Glenn on March 20, 1935.

A memorial service will be held July 31 at 2:30 p.m. at the Stayton community center, 400 W. Virginia St. in Stayton.
