Poll puts Bonamici ahead

A poll commissioned by the liberal web site DailyKos and the Service Employees International Union showed Democrat Suzanne Bonamici with a strong lead against her Republican opponent Rob Cornilles in the special election to fill former U.S. Rep. David Wu's vacant seat.

The poll, conducted by Public Policy Polling Dec. 13-14, surveyed 979 likely voters by automated phone call. Of those, 52 percent said they would vote for Bonamici, 41 percent said they'd vote for Cornilles and 7 percent said they were undecided.

The margin of error was calculated at 3.1 percent.

The Bonamici campaign welcomed the poll, while the Cornilles campaign said the motives of the groups that commissioned it tainted the results.

The results of the poll are close to the results of the 2010 election, where Cornilles earned 42 percent of the vote, losing to Wu's 54 percent.

Oh deer! It's cold outside

Forest Grove and Banks firefighters took to frigid waters last Wednesday in order to save a deer that fell through inch-thick ice covering a pond on Northwest Hoffer Road near Banks. Firefighters used Forest Grove Fire and and #8200;Rescue's boat to break up the ice and work their way out to the deer, which was in frigid six-foot-deep water.

Once the firefighters cleared a path, the deer swam through the cleared pond to safety.

40 kids shop with cops

Approximately 20 officers and volunteers with the Forest Grove Police Department, the Cornelius Police Department and Transit Police assisted 40 children and their families in the annual 'Shop with a Cop' program Dec. 14 and 15. The program was made possible by donations and organization by the Cornelius Walmart and the Cornelius Fred Meyer stores.
