Crook County drops a close match to Hermiston for the second time in a week, leaving the Bulldogs alone atop the IMC

by: LON AUSTIN/CENTRAL OREGONIAN - Riley Omlid of Crook County controls a Pendleton wrestler in their 103-pound match. Riley went on to win the match 8-2.

The Crook County High School wrestling team split a pair of league matches over the weekend. On Friday night the Cowboys dropped a close match to Hermiston for the second time in less than a week and then bounced back to easily defeat Pendleton on Saturday.
The Cowboys lost a number of close matches as they fell to the Hermiston Bulldogs 36-27. That was one point closer than they had been the week before in the finals of the Oregon Wrestling Classic.
"That's a lack of work on our part," said Head Coach Mike Shinkle. "You've got to win the close matches. That's the bottom line. You are going to have close matches like that in the tournament and you have to win the close matches. That's a lack of intensity in the practice room. I'm extremely disappointed. I don't feel that we got beat by a better team. We didn't wrestle to our full potential and we lost it."
The match was fiercely competitive and close the entire way with a number of matches that could have gone either way. The Bulldogs won the first two matches of the evening at 140 and 145 pounds to take a 6-0 lead then the Cowboys rallied to four of the next six to take a 21-18 lead before Hermiston put the match out of reach, getting pins at both 112 and 119 pounds.
"That's just a great dual for wrestling," said Hermiston Coach Curt Burger. "We were state champs last year and they were second and it could be the same again this year. We both changed some things, but the outcome was the same."
For the Cowboys, Micah Perry (160) and Howie Mole (215) each won by pins while Brett Gast (125), Kody Dixon (135) and Dustin Chapman (152) all won decisions and Tyrell Albert (285) won by forfeit.
On Saturday the Cowboys dominated the match, winning 11 of 14 matches. Gast (125), Dixon (135), Taylor Coyle (140), Chapman (152) and Tyler McCormick (160) all recorded falls, while Jared Dixon (130), Mole (215), and Albert (285) each won by forfeit. Riley Omlid (103), Andy Katzenberger (112) and Levi Roan (189) each won by decision.
"We wrestled tough," said Shinkle. "Pendleton is on a rebounding couple of years here, but I tell you what, in a couple of years you need to be looking out for Pendleton because coach Phillips does a great job there and they've got a lot of young kids in the lineup that are definitely tough."
Shinkle also noted that he was pleased with Micah Perry for wrestling up at 171 pounds to face a tougher opponent even though he lost his match by major decision.
"He knew the kid was tough and it was his choice to wrestle up to face tough competition and that's what makes a champion," Shinkle said.
The Cowboys have a busy week, taking on non-league rival Redmond at 7 p.m. Wednesday in a home match that figures to be exciting. Redmond is coming off of a third place finish in the 6A portion of the Oregon Wrestling Classic and the two teams look to be evenly matched. Then Crook County travels to The Dalles/Wahtonka on Thursday for a league match and finish the week at the Reser Tournament of Champions in Hillsboro Friday and Saturday.
