Cowgirls finish third in own tournament behind Bend and Sisters in what could be a preview of district

by: LON AUSTIN/CENTRAL OREGONIAN - Rachel Kelso putts on the second hole at Meado Lakes Golf Course on Friday. Kelso shot a 97 for the day as Crook County finished third in the tournament

The Crook County High School girls golf team placed third in their own tournament on Friday.
Playing at Meadow Lakes Golf Course, the site of the Intermountain Conference Championships on May 5-6, the Cowgirls trailed only Bend and Sisters in the nine-team tournament.
"JoBeth Hamon played well," said Head Coach Grant Patterson. "The rest of the girls felt like they all seemed to have a couple of big holes or their scores would have been even better."
Bend shot a 346 to defeat Sisters by one shot, while the Cowgirls shot a 463, 20 strokes ahead of fourth -place Summit.
Chelsey Lind of Mountain View was the individual winner, but was the only Cougar golfer to shoot under 100 for the day. All four of Bend's golfers shot under 90 and it was that depth that proved to be the difference as Jennifer Hilts led the way with an 83.
Lindsay Reeve of Sisters finished second with a 77, but only two Sisters golfers finished under 90.
JoBeth Hamon led the way for Crook County shooting an 84, while Sarah Crofcheck shot an 87. Rounding out the scoring for Crook County was Kersey Wilcox and Rachel Kelso shooting 95 and 97 respectively, while Cami Williams finished with a 98.
"If we can get rid of those big holes I think we can get competitive," said Patterson. "I would like to give Bend a run, but you know, all in all we had a good day."
The Cowgirls play Tuesday in Bend and finish out the regular season on Thursday at Aspen Lakes in Sisters in their final tuneup before hosting district.
The district tournament looks to be a shootout between Bend, Crook County and Summit with only the top two teams going to state. In the later part of the season Bend has been coming out on top with Summit and Crook County splitting their meetings.
"We shot 363 and that was with some pretty high numbers on some holes," said Patterson. "So I am hoping that we can improve on that and if we do, we should have a shot."
