Skiers from the Beaverton area took their places among the state's best at Saturday's 2008 season opener, the annual Christine Cato Memorial Slalom Race at Timberline.

The Oregon Episcopal girls were first in the team scoring, led by overall winner Alecia McCord, who took top honors with a time of 49.57 seconds for her single run.

There were more local skiers close behind McCord too, including Sunset's Maggie Greene (second in 51.17), Southridge's Jacqui Monahan (fourth in 52.54), Jesuit's Kathryn Wessinger (6th in 54.49) and Isabelle Wuilloud (seventh in 54.54), Westview's Jacquelyn Wheeler (18th in 58.23) and Beaverton's Brittany Oreste (24th in 59.45).

The Jesuit boys were second overall behind Sandy, led by Colin Yost's seventh-place finish in 49.38.

Other local finishers from the Cato race included Southridge's Steven Lantz (second in 48.00), OES' Christopher Chapman (sixth in 49.20), Beaverton's Spencer Allen (15th in 51.43), Sunset's Sean Stevenson (20th in 52.17), Westview's Dan Birman (57th in 58.12), and Aloha's Eric Pinnock (107th in 1:20.52).

In upcoming events, the Metro League teams open their league season on Saturday with a giant slalom competition at Willamette Pass, then ski another giant slalom at SkiBowl on Mt. Hood on Jan. 18.
