SOFTBALL: Vikings split with Sunset on Saturday, prep for Westview Tournament this week

Forest Grove hasn't jumped out to the kind of start that head coach Joe Baumgartner would have liked, but the Vikings did manage to get their first win of the year on Saturday against Sunset at Tigard High School.

The Vikings (1-5) edged Sunset 7-5 on Saturday behind nine strikeouts from sophomore lefthander Joe Piercey and a 4-for-4 day at the plate from Taylor Vandecouvering. The good vibes from that win didn't last long, however, as the two teams returned to Sunset High to play a second game, which the Apollos dominated in a 14-0 romp.

'We're off to a 1-5 start, which is not great, but we're playing some really good competition,' Baumgartner said. 'The bright spot is that we're starting to put together some good at-bats. Down the road I think we'll be able to score some runs.'
