The Portland Gay Mens Chorus will perform “BraveSouls and Dreamers,” a message of hope on July 9 in Lake Oswego. The group will travel to Florida later in July for the work’s East Coast premiere.

The Portland Gay Mens Chorus will present 'BraveSouls and Dreamers,' a cantata that explores the repercussions of war on the human experience, at Christ Church Episcopal Parish on July 9 at 7:30 p.m.

Framed by the words of some of history's greatest peacemakers - Ghandi, Mother Theresa and Jesus Christ - the lyrics boldly contrasts with the prevailing hope of peace with the stark realities of war. This work for chorus, orchestra and soloists will make its east coast premiere later in July in Miami, Fla.

'BraveSouls and Dreamers' is a bold new work by composer Robert Seeley and librettist Robert Espindola, recognized internationally for their work in men's choral music. PGMC Artistic Director Bob Mensel describes the work as compelling, the music rich, and the words - often - strident and provoking. He said, 'Historically, artists and art communities have provided social commentary on contemporary social issues, including the realities of war, social injustices, and the need for a world at peace. Our country is at war, and I've noticed few arts groups address this fact in their programming.

'The message of BraveSouls and Dreamers is not political; it is human. Its reflection on the tragedies of war is as germane to the conflict in Iraq as it is to Vietnam, World War II, the American Revolution, and the Civil War. While very few art organizations speak to these issues today, PGMC is proud to bring to our community this powerful message of hope.'

Featured soloist, Mezzo-Soprano Jennifer Gill, sings the part of a mother, who symbolically represents all mothers who have lost children in war. Gill received the Marquis Award in the New York Classical Singer's Vocal Competition as a Young Artist and currently performs with the Portland Opera.

The performance of BraveSouls and Dreamers is part of PGMC's Festival and will include dinner and an auction, as well as a performance by PGMC's vocal subgroup, Cascade. Tickets to the event are $35 and can be purchased online at .

A CD of BraveSouls and Dreamers is also available online. PGMC is donating a portion of all sales to Mercy Corps to support its efforts to rebuild communities.

Christ Church Parish is located at 1060 Chandler Road.
