Rev. Mark Rabe to speak about his work June 10-11
A missionary to the African nation of Kenya will pay a visit to Redeemer Lutheran Church, 795 E. Powell Blvd., for its mission festival Friday and Saturday, June 10-11.
The Rev. Mark A. Rabe, 41, has several jobs, including teaching and training pastors at Matongo Lutheran Theological College and Atemo Bible College and serving as chaplain at Ringa Girls High School in southwest Kenya.
One of the major issues he deals with is the effect of HIV/AIDS, which has left many children orphaned in Kenya.
'Almost everyone is affected either by a family member who has become infected or has lost someone due to HIV,' he says.
He adds that serving in Kenya also is a challenge to his sense of priorities.
'Things work much slower in Kenya than here,' he says. 'We Americans expect things to happen now. Kenyans are more relational, which is OK, and therefore we spend a lot of time getting to know people before spreading the gospel in word and deed, through witness and acts of mercy.'
Rabe is touring the United States raising funds for his work and expressing gratitude to churches like Redeemer that support his work. He posts a blog at rabesinkenya.blog
spot.com, where readers can learn more about his life.
The community is invited to participate in the 'Called to Confess' festival at Redeemer, which begins with registration at 5:30 p.m. Friday, June 10, followed by social time and a 6:30 p.m. banquet.
The Rev. Bernhard Seter, chairman of the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod's Board of International Missions, will speak, and Rabe will give the sermon at the 8 p.m. closing service.
The festival continues at 8:15 a.m. Saturday, June 11, with a presentation by Rabe on his Kenyan activities and the general state of missions in that country.
A question/answer panel discussion on missions will follow. Other activities during the day include presentations, lunch and a short service.
Registration fee is $35 per person and $25 for students, with all fees and donations, after meal expenses, going to help support Rabe's work.
