Next: The Bevos finish their homestand at 7 tonight against Sacramento. They head to Colorado Springs for four games and then, after an off day Wednesday, to Tucson for four.

• Tonight's starter, Jack Cassel, could use a good outing. He's 0-2 with a 8.76 ERA in three starts. … The Bevos had been scored on first in 12 of 14 games through Wednesday.

• Catcher Pete Laforest may or may not return to the Beavers when his stint with San Diego ends. He's filling in for injured Josh Bard. The Padres cannot option Laforest back to Portland -he's out of options; they would have to waive him, exposing him to other teams. If he cleared waivers, he could be a Bevo again.

• It's early, but stats at San Diego through Wednesday show Terrmel Sledge hitting .219 (7 for 32) while playing left field, Paul McAnulty .125 (1 for 8), LaForest .455 (5 for 11) and Mike Thompson sporting a 7.84 ERA in 10 1/3 innings. McAnulty, who hurt his knee in spring training while vying to start in left for the Padres, joined the Bevos this week; relief pitcher Aaron Rakers went to San Diego.
