Harvest Festival at the Pumpkin Patch

Labor Day weekend officially opens the cornhusked labyrinth better known as the Maize.

Located within the sprawling 500-acre Pumpkin Patch at Sauvie Island, the Maize won't be the only attraction luring folks from the city to the farm: Look out for hayrides, a cow train, a giant slide, and fresh flowers and fruit you can pick for the trip home.

The Maize opens at 10 a.m. SATURDAY, Sept. 1, and runs through Oct. 31, Pumpkin Patch, 16511 N.W. Gillihan Road, Sauvie Island, 503-621-3874,, festival free, Maize $7, ages 6 to 12 and seniors $5, age 5 and under free

Last year Kumoricon, a convention celebrating Japanese anime culture, drew more than 2,000 fans to Portland. ('Kumori' means 'cloudy' in Japanese, making a fitting name for an Oregon event.)

This year the costumed role-playing games, Dance Dance Revolution contests and general ani-mayhem heads north to Vancouver, Wash.

Portland Farmers Market

Summer may be winding down, but the downtown Portland Farmers Market is still bubbling hot. Take Saturday's 'Hot Stuff' salsa-making contest as spicy proof. The tasty competition is part of the market's 'Tomato Fiesta.'

La Femme Magnifique International Pageant

Mix 'American Idol,' 'America's Next Top Model' and 'Project Runway' with a healthy dash of Vegas showmanship and you have all the makings for a very entertaining evening.

Certainly Darcelle's glamorous pageant to crown the top female impersonator in the world is anything but a drag. This year's theme is 'Villains of the Silver Screen.' And, oh, the rhinestones will roll.

8 p.m. SUNDAY, Sept. 2, Portland Ballroom, Oregon Convention Center, 777 N.E. Martin Luther King Blvd., 503-222-5338,, $35
