The Chabad of Lake Oswego will be hosting a six-week course from the Rohr Jewish Learning Institute beginning Oct. 30 at The Crowne Plaza Hotel in Lake Oswego.

'The Land and the Spirit: Why We all Care about Israel' will be lead by Rabbi Motti Wilhelm. The class will meet each Tuesday beginning Oct. 30 from 7:30 to 9 p.m. Fee for the course is $100, which includes textbooks.

'The course is one of three educational courses offered to the Jewish community to rediscover the soul of Israel,' said Wilhelm.

The Rohr Jewish Leading Institute has been created in the tradition of teachers establishing bonds with students pursuing intellectual and spiritual growth in their adult years. JLI courses are designed for students ranging from first-time learners to those with years of prior study.

The Rohr JLI is the largest institute of adult learning of its kind, teaching in more than 250 cities around the world. Its courses are taught through interactive dialogue accompanied by textbooks and dramatic audio-visual presentations.

Wilhelm recently relocated from Brooklyn, N.Y. to Lake Oswego, where he resides with his wife Mimi and daughter Sima. He has been selected to be the rabbi focusing on building Chabad of Lake Oswego to serve the local Jewish community.

Hebrew youth education programs are at the top of the rabbi's priority list, as well as adult programs such as The Land and The Spirit course.

'Young people don't feel a bond to Israel,' Wilhelm said. 'We want them to understand the connection their ancestors felt to Israel, and why they should care about Israel.'

Both Rabbi Wilhelm and Mimi Wilhelm are dedicated to creating opportunities for people of the Jewish faith to connect with each other.

'Holding Hebrew classes is one of many offerings for education of our children. Our Mommy and Me play sessions are another opportunity,' he said.

Mimi Wilhelm is holding a Mommy and Me session this Sunday afternoon.
