The first State Farm agent in town has also played a character of same name
It's got to be unusual for an insurance agent to moonlight as the Easter Bunny.
But Bunny Girt has done both.
The owner of Bunny Girt Insurance opened the doors to her office on July 1, 1984. She was the first State Farm agent in Cornelius.
It's located at 1229 N. Adair St.
'The phone system was long distance to everyone, including Beaverton, and there were about 5,100 residents at that time,' Girt recalled.
A native of North Dakota, she moved from the family farm to Cedar Hills in the fourth grade, graduating from Sunset High School in the Beaverton School District in 1963.
She attended Linfield College in McMinnville on a voice and piano scholarship, moving to Los Angeles to live with her aunt, a professional singer.
Not long after, Girt started her career with Prudential Insurance.
Later, she landed a job with Consolidated Insurance in Portland and married her childhood sweetheart, Terry Girt.
Bunny has two grown children, Tammy Lynn Fekete of Tigard and Tricia Anne Getz of Kennewick, Wash. There are also two grandchildren: 10-year-old Torey Getz and 8-year-old Thor Getz.
'My daughter Tammy has the 'grand-dog,' Jake,' said Bunny, whose sense of humor and whimsy allowed her to play the Easter Bunny at various spring celebrations in Cornelius for more than 20 years.
Her community connections run deep. Girt has been involved with the Cornelius Chamber of Commerce, holding 'every office at one time or another,' she noted.
She also has served with the Cornelius Boosters, Centro Cultural and the Virginia Garcia Memorial Health Center.
Girt is on the board of directors for the ARC of Washington County. In the Forest Grove School District, she has taught personal finance classes.
Beyond that, Girt supported the Luis Palau Association for many years and was Citizen of the Year and Ambassador of the Year in Cornelius.
Her favorite part of her job is 'putting a smile on someone's face' and 'solving complicated situations in an honest and caring way.'
When she's not working, Girt likes to garden and play in a five-piece band called 'Shades of Gray,' whose members include two of her brothers.
The book she read most recently was 'I Am Proud of You' by Tim Madigan.
When she can, Girt takes 'fun vacations' to Palm Desert, Calif., with a group of friends called 'The Glitzie Grammas.'
