SUMMER BASEBALL - High school team starts playoffs, 10U squad wins first two at Ripken Regionals

Sandy's OIBA summer baseball team, the No. 5 finisher out of the Lolich division, enters the playoffs this weekend with a best-of-three elimination series against Westview, the No. 4 team out of the Olin division.

The Pioneers will play their "home" game at 5 p.m. Friday on Gresham High School's varsity field, while the final two games will be played in a doubleheader format at 12 p.m. Saturday at Westview.

The winner of the series gains one of the eight at-large bids to the OIBA tournament.

Other eastside qualifiers include Barlow, the runner-up in the Pesky division, takes on Jesuit in a seeding series, while Oregon City takes on Reynolds in elimination games.

• In the Cal Ripken 10U West Regionals, Sandy won its first two pool-play games Thursday, coming back to beat Montana West 6-5 and scoring a 12-2 mercy-rule win over Ferndale, Wash.
