River traffic will still flow

The nation's oldest working vertical-lift bridge will take a rest Sunday for a Multnomah County paint job.

The Hawthorne Bridge will be closed from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday, weather permitting, as work crews repaint the concrete counterweights on its lift spans. The bridge must be in the open position to be painted.

River traffic will not be affected, the county said, but drivers will have to use alternate river crossings like the Burnside, Morrison, Marquam and Ross Island bridges.

The paint was donated by Miller Paint and Willamette Light Brigade, a nonprofit group that raised money to light the Hawthorne Bridge.
