Knowing hunger is on the rise, schools across the North Clackamas are planning food drives to support struggling families.

Most North Clackamas schools, including can gathering record-setter Milwaukie High, support the annual Elks/Lions food drive, a long tradition. Top needs include nutritious, non-perishable foods, especially peanut butter (plastic jars only), tuna, canned meat, canned pasta, chili, and hearty soups.

The effort hopes to serve more than 700 families. Donations can be delivered to North Clackamas Schools during school hours through Dec. 18. To make cash donations or to volunteer as a sorter (Dec. 18 and 19), a boxer (Dec. 20), or delivery driver (Dec. 22) contact Dennis Tichenor at 503-479-6271.

Clackamas High School’s 15th annual Winter Rage hopes to serve more than 150 families. Students will gather canned or boxed food, toys, new or gently used clothing, blankets, sleeping bags, and personal hygiene items, and cash contributions.

Bring Winter Rage donations to Clackamas High during school hours by Dec. 14, or deliver items to the school’s west campus between 9 a.m. and noon on Saturday, Dec. 15.
