Thirty-year-old Jorge Hidalgo of Happy Valley is expected to survive after being shot in his upper chest while walking on Tuesday evening by North Gresham Park, 1111 S.E. 217th Ave.

The shooter has not been identified, and the Gresham Police Department is seeking the public’s assistance with identifying the person responsible for this crime.

On Feb. 5 at 10:22 p.m., police officers were dispatched to Mt. Hood Medical Center on the report that a man walked into the hospital’s emergency department with a gunshot wound to his shoulder. Officers briefly met with Hidalgo before he was transported to Emanuel Hospital via ambulance.

It is believed Hidalgo was shot around 10 p.m. He told police he was walking by the park, alone, when an unidentified man in all dark clothing approached him and demanded he hand over his wallet and backpack.

When Hidalgo started to take off the backpack, the suspect shot him one time at close range before taking the bag. The complete contents of the bag are not known. Hidalgo did not have any other information about the suspect, but believes he may be a younger Hispanic man.

Gresham detectives are investigating this case and have yet to determine whether or not this is a completely random act of violence.

Anyone with any information about the shooting or with information about the identity of the suspect is encouraged to call the Gresham Police Tip Line at 503-618-2719 or 1-888-989-3505.
