The structure is made of playing cards, duct tape, plastic straws, glue and bamboo skewers. In addition to holding 410 pounds, the structure survived seven impacts from a ram, seen in the right foreground. Two local public-charter-school teams scored first-place finishes in the state Destination Imagination competition on Saturday, April 6, in Corvallis to go to the global competition in Knoxville, Tenn., from May 22-26.

Winners included elementary students at North Clackamas’ Cascade Heights and the Bad Bunny Corporation, a team of four eighth- and ninth-grade girls from Oregon City’s Alliance Charter Academy.

“This year, they decided to mix it up a little and solve the theatrical improv challenge in addition to the structure challenge,” said BBC team manager Jolein Vona. “Placing first in both challenges was a surprise to the team and their parents.”

Oregon City’s two middle schools, Ogden and Gardiner, each sent teams that received second-place finishes at state. Oak Grove’s Riverside All-stars team placed second at regionals on March 16 at Century High School in Hillsboro, and third at state, strong performances for a first-time team, according to judges.
