Mere hours after they were awarded as Academic All-Stars for the highest cumulative GPA in the whole state, North Clackamas Christian School’s choir got first place in their 1A/2A division in the statewide championships on Thursday at George Fox University.

NCCS’ A Cappella Choir was hoping for success in state competitions after starring in a well-received theatrical production (“From ‘Sound of Music’ to state championships,” April 24.)

Music director Rebecca Steele gushed that her students “led with their hearts and left it all on the stage” on May 9 with a “remarkable” performance. Students worked especially hard this year to improve their sight-reading from last year, and their success in nearly doubling that score put them over the top with points for the win.

“However, they really want to make a difference with their words and not just sing to win,” Steele said. “I really think it was their passion for the mission of our music that led them to the win this year. I could not be prouder of a greater group of kids than these.”
