Oregon City High School junior Jake Halbakken was elected Oregon Association of Student Councils state president last week at its conference in Seaside.

by: OCHS - HalbakkenHalbakken had just completed a year-long term as OASC's metro-area representative during the previous school year. He also has been elected vice president of the OCHS student body.

"For me to be elected president means that I have been given the opportunity to hold the highest level of leadership in the state," he said.

According to Cami Beatty, faculty adviser to the OCHS Student Council, this completes a monthlong campaign where Halbakken ran against two other students. Approximately 100 Oregon schools voted.

Halbakken's term as state president goes through November 2014. As part of his representation responsibilities, he will attend OASC's national conference in June in Orlando to represent the state of Oregon.

"In the next year, I hope to accomplish a new record of schools in Oregon that are a part of OASC and gaining benefits by becoming members," he said.

The nonprofit organization provides leadership development to students and adult advisers at middle and high schools in Oregon.
