Join a one-day volunteer “bird count” with the Portland Audubon Society between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 4, as part of the 39th annual Christmas Bird Count.

Local resident Dan Strong will lead groups of bird counters to sites in Clackamas County that day, including the pond behind the Ledding Library, sites along the Willamette River and in the Three-Creeks Natural Area, adjacent to the North Clackamas Aquatic Park.

In last year’s Portland bird count, 238 volunteers, including about a dozen in Clackamas County, observed birds in the field, and another 152 watched visitors at local bird feeders. Together, they counted 130 species, a record number here.

Those 390 participants made the Portland bird count the largest in the United States, second only to Edmonton, Canada, in the Americas.

Beginning birders are welcome.
