Named in honor of a tireless advocate for forestry education, the award recognizes significant contributions to the advancement of public information, education and understanding of forestry. Nelson was selected for his passion and dedication to forestry education and for his work engaging adults, educators, and youth in learning about Oregon forests.

Nelson teaches a variety of courses at CCC in Oregon City, including arboriculture, organic farming, insect identification and pruning. His love for plants, people and insects (not necessarily in that order) encourages him to use his talents in many ways outside of the traditional classroom setting.

Nelson has volunteered for many years with Friends of Trees, helping them to train volunteers and assisting with tree-planting projects. He also helps his neighborhood elementary school plant and maintain trees on the school grounds. Nelson and his wife grow a large garden at home to provide fresh produce for meals and preserving.

The award will be presented at the Oregon Board of Forestry meeting on March 5 in Salem.
