Author of 'The Book of Joan' will speak from 7 to 8 p.m. on Sept. 7 at the Ledding Library Pond House

Lidia Yuknavitch, author of "The Book of Joan" and the national bestselling novel "The Small Backs of Children," will speak from 7 to 8 p.m. on Sept. 7 at the Ledding Library Pond House, 2215 S.E. Harrison St., in Milwaukie.

Lidia YuknavitchHer free presentation is part of the Ledding Cultural Forum.

Yuknavitch is the winner of the 2016 Oregon Book Award's Ken Kesey Award for Fiction as well as the Reader's Choice Award.

She founded the workshop series Corporeal Writing in Portland, where she teaches both in person and online. She received her doctorate in literature from the University of Oregon.

Cultural Forum

Yuknavitch said she will talk about history, myth-making and imagination at the Cultural Forum and will also read from "The Book of Joan."

Online reviews describe the novel as "a riveting tale of destruction and love found in the direst of places — even at the extreme end of post-human experience."

Yuknavitch has "written a fierce heroine like no other. 'The Book of Joan' is an explosive work of fiction that considers what it means to be human, the fluidity of sex and gender and the urgency of art as a means for survival," one review says.

What she most looks forward to at events like the Cultural Forum is "talking to each other in small settings about art and life, and how we can keep each other from losing hope."

Events like the forum are important, Yuknavitch said, "Because we're living during a time in which there are forces hell bent on destroying things like libraries, open and shared knowledge, and art."

And, she noted, "Because we can't afford any longer to keep science, art, business, technology, economy, social justice and love in separate camps."

Yuknavitch added, "I'm humbled and grateful to be able to share rooms with other mammals who still believe in ideas and books."
