Girls join members of Boy Scouts of America to place flags at Willamette National Cemetery for first time this year

In a historic change announced this year, the Boy Scouts of America invited girls to join their programs at every level, including earning the highest rank in Scouting, the Eagle Scout.

On Thursday, May 24, following a brief 6:30 p.m. opening ceremony, approximately 1,500 Scouts and their families placed more than 140,000 flags in remembrance.

Don Thomas, a World War II veteran, organized this event for the first time in 1968. He was back again this year, joining Scouts as they spent a moment honoring each memorial, saluting before moving to the next.
