The Cavaliers are second only to Canby in the Midget Federal County Tournament

The young Cavaliers’ only losses in the county tournament were to Canby, a team that went 16-0 in league during the regular season, and that went on to repeat as state champion. The Cavaliers (11-5) had also finished second to the Cougars in league.

“Canby has an outstanding ball club,” said Clackamas coach Mike Bruno. “They went undefeated in league and they had several kids back from last year’s state championship team.”

The Cavaliers dispatched with the top teams from Wilsonville (5-4) and Silverton (12-6) in their first two games of the county tournament, before losing to Canby 8-3.

They then bounced back with a 7-5 win over Tualatin’s top team, before losing to the Cougars again in the final, 10-4.

“We had pretty good pitching and defense throughout the tournament,” said Bruno. “And we had good hitting too. We scored a lot of runs....

“This was the first year playing together for these kids, and they’ve come a long way since the first of May. Their overall camaraderie was just outstanding. They stayed involved throughout our games and they cheered one another on whenever we were at bat. They were a joy to coach.”

Vying for the Cavaliers were: Logan Beard (shortstop/pitcher), Owen Bruno (third base/outfield/pitcher), Logan Chastain (third base/outfield/catcher), Emerson Dennis (second base/outfield/pitcher), Cade Martin (third base/outfield), Caden Stevens (second base/outfield), Ashton MacClanathan (second base/outfield/pitcher), Trevor Wilson (second base/catcher/pitcher), Aiden McGuire (first base, outfield), Tatum Erickson (shortstop/catcher), Jake Wallace (third base/outfield/pitcher), Andrew West (shortstop/outfield) and Wyatt Beard (bat boy).

Ryan Erickson and Eric Wilson assisted Bruno in coaching the team.

The Cavaliers bowed out of the state tournament in three games, defeating North Marion 7-4, but dropping games to Sherwood (12-7) and to state runner-up McMinnville (10-3).

Owen Bruno allowed just one run in four innings on the mound in the win over North Marion. Trevor Wilson crushed the ball for a home run in the Sherwood game; Tatum Erickson had two hits in the loss o McMinnville.
