An Eagle Creek man pleaded guilty to rape, sodomy, sex abuse and other sex crimes on Monday, Feb. 4, and will spend the next 35 years in jail as a result.

Kenneth CartlidgeKenneth Arnold Cartlidge, 44, opted to accept a plea agreement in order to avoid taking the case to trial.

Convictions for the charges against him could have lead to a prison sentence of several hundred years.

Cartlidge was a volunteer with the Firwood Elementary School chess club in Sandy for two years, but the charges did not stem from that stint. One of his victims was a teenage relative. The others were the children of friends and neighbors, one of whom is now an adult and was abused by Cartlidge for 13 years.

The incidents occurred between January 2009 and September 2011, at which point Cartlidge was arrested and taken into police custody.

Cartlidge was originally set to face trial much sooner. But days before the trial was set to start, one of his victims came forward and assisted investigators in obtaining more evidence. Photographs and videos of Cartlidge's activities were discovered, at which point he was re-indicted and charged with 60 sex crimes.
