Estacada volunteer firefighter Damon Faust was honored last week by leaders at the county and national levels.

After receiving the American Legion Firefighter of the Year award at the organization's national conference in Minneapolis last month, Faust was honored during the Clackamas County Commission's business meeting on Thursday, Sept. 6. During the event in Oregon City, he received commendations from the commissioners and in a letter from Sen. Ron Wyden.

Faust has been a member of the Estacada Rural Fire District since 2016. He helped develop the district's Veteran to Firefighter program, which uses fire service to help former service members acclimate back to civilian life.

Prior to his work in Estacada, Faust served in the U.S. Army. During his deployment to Baghdad in 2005, he rescued two civilians from a burning building. He later received the Soldier's Medal for Heroism for these actions.

Faust has also been involved with assisting communities after natural disasters, such as Hurricane Sandy, the Oso Mudslide in Washington state, and the Moore Tornado in Oklahoma. Additionally, he trained emergency medical technicians in Haiti during the aftermath of Hurricane Matthew.

Wyden praised Faust for his dedication.

"Your record of local, national and international service to your community stands out as extraordinary and we thank you for it," he wrote in a letter, which was read at last Thursday's meeting by field representative Ree Armitage.

Armitage also presented Faust with an American Flag that had been flown over the U.S. Capitol Building.

Clackamas County Commissioner Chair Jim Bernard thanked Faust for his "outstanding dedication and service to Clackamas County and its citizens."

Estacada American Legion Carl Douglas Post Commander Terry Brown added Faust is the first firefighter from Oregon to receive the national award.

"It's a significant award for Oregon and for Damon," he said.

Faust stated he would like to see the award lead to the growth of the Veteran to Firefighter program.

"My hope is that we're able to do these things not just in Estacada but in the other rural districts in Clackamas County. To take our program and mirror it, that's my hope," he said.
