Hood Community College.High school seniors Michael Gabriel and Brittany Thompson did Estacada proud when they competed in the Ford/AAA State Skills Contest on May 10 at Mt. Hood Community College.

Gabriel and Thompson had two of the top 20 Automotive Service Excellence test scores in Oregon, which earned them entry into the contest.

The students worked hard to prepare.

Gabriel and EHS automotive service technology teacher Glen Nation talked Sandy’s Suburban Ford into loaning the students a 2012 Ford Focus to practice on for a week.

The competition was tough.

Oregon’s top-20 high school automotive technicians were presented with identical ‘bugs’ to correct on a 2013 Ford Focus.

Students were ranked by how quickly they could identify the “bugs,” correct them, shut the hood and test drive the car.

Gabriel and Thompson were one of the quickest teams to diagnose their car and placed eighth in the state.

The students were celebrated at an award ceremony and banquet and presented with a trophy.

Gabriel has plans to continue his automotive studies at a WyoTech campus.

Thompson has enlisted in the Army and qualified to perform four-wheel vehicle maintenance.
