by: CONTRIBUTED PHOTO - Estacada sophomore Stone Rathbun puts his opponent in a pinning predicament. At the Stayton Dual Meet Tournament on Saturday, Dec. 15, the Estacada High School varsity wrestling team placed third out of 10 teams, with several impressive individual performances to go around.

Even though he wrestled above his weight class, junior Luke Youngberg crushed the competition, winning five of his matches and going undefeated.

Freshman Nick Ledbury also wrestled above his class, at 195 pounds, but went 3-0 in his matches and also had two forfeits in his favor.

Junior Donny Wenlund went 3-1 at the 126-pound division, with one forfeit.

Although the team beat Crescent Valley 57-21, coach Jimmy Grochowsky said that injuries and illnesses “put holes in our varsity lineup.” The team had to forfeit at the 113 and 132 pound levels and three freshmen were promoted from the junior varsity squad to fill gaps in the roster.

Scappoose took first overall, with Stayton coming in second.

The Weisbrodt Invitational is scheduled to take place Friday, Dec. 21, at Lebanon High School. Grochowsky said he expects some very stiff competition.

“We’re going to be wrestling some of the best teams in the state down there,” Grochowsky said. “We’re going to take some hits.”

Defending 5A champions Dallas will be competing, along with Crook County, Sweet Home, Lebanon, Hood River and Silverton.

Grochowsky said that most of those schools have very strong programs in place, but added that some Rangers’ grapplers should be able to shine in individual competition.
