Key starters return from multiple-game suspensions

It’s been a difficult few weeks for the Estacada High School varsity boys basketball team, as the Rangers have been without most of their key starters.

Many of them returned to the team for its Friday, Feb. 1, game at Madras following a series of suspensions stemming from the violation of school and team policy.

Senior Ryan Vauthier made the most of his court comeback, racking up 24 points in the contest. Of those, 17 were scored in the first half, as Madras began double-teaming Vauthier in an attempt to contain him.

“We competed a lot better than we have,” Vauthier said.

Madras came out swinging in the third quarter, with a couple of half-court shots and other three-pointers to boost their score.

“They caught on fire,” Vauthier said.

The Madras defense had several steals throughout the game, increasing their time of offensive possession on the way to a 68-45 win.

Up next for the Rangers is a Friday, Feb. 8, game at Gladstone. Vauthier describes Gladstone as “pretty tough.”

“They’re really athletic and fast,” he said. “But if we can control the tempo, we’ll be fine.”
