Portland Christian gets the winning run in the sixth inning Friday

by: ESTACADA NEWS: DAVID BALL - Estacada pitcher Casey Jones fires a ball toward the plate during Fridays 2-1 loss to Portland Christian.Estacada’s Weston summer baseball team jumped ahead early, but couldn’t hold off Portland Christian during a 2-1 loss in the opening round of the Rangers’ small-school tournament Friday.

The Rangers took a 1-0 lead into the fourth inning before the Royals jammed the bases with no one out. Nathan Mumford led off with a single and scored the tying run when Estacada made a high throw to the plate, allowing him to step in safely.

But the Rangers escaped any further damage when catcher Bryce Babikoff popped up from behind the plate and chased down a Royals base runner that got lost in no man’s land halfway down the third-base line.

Weston starter Casey Jones finished the threat with a strikeout.

The Royals went down in order in the fifth inning, highlighted when Jones rushed off the mound and won a footrace to first base with Portland Christian’s Steven Mumford.

Weston had a chance to regain the lead in the fifth inning when Jarek Franklin drew a lead-off walk and Zach Stamm followed with a single down the third-base line. But a series of base-running mistakes cost the Rangers, who made two outs at third base. The Portland Christian catcher picked off one runner leading too far off the bag and caught another stealing moments later.

The Royals put across the winning run in the sixth inning when Zack Cooke punched a single into left field that allowed Mumford to slide in just ahead of the tag.

Weston put two runners on in the late innings, but couldn’t get either of them past first base.

LaSalle won the championship game 6-5 over Burns on Sunday, while Weston scored an 8-0 win over Gladstone in the third-place game.

The Weston club hosts an eight-team tournament this weekend at Estacada High (see sidebar).
