In honor of Veterans Day, area government buildings, including most state agencies and post offices, will be closed Monday, Nov. 11. A variety of events honoring military veterans are also planned in the area. Our roundup is below:

n All veterans and their families are invited to be special guests at Forest Grove High School’s annual Veterans Day assembly on Thursday, Nov. 8. The assembly starts at 9:20 a.m. in the FGHS gym, 1401 Nichols Lane. Veterans should arrive between 8:30 a.m. and 9 a.m. Keynote speaker will be Paul W. McCahon, a retired U.S. Army sergeant who was a helicopter gunner in Vietnam. A reception for veterans will follow in the library.

n Pacific University will hold a celebration at 3:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 12 in McCready Hall, 2043 College Way, to honor all those who have served or are currently serving in the armed forces. Veterans and their families from western Washington County, the Pacific community and beyond will be recognized. A reception will follow.

n Due to the Veterans Day holiday, Monday’s meeting of the Forest Grove City Council will be postponed to Tuesday, Nov. 13 at 7 p.m. Councilors will meet in the council chambers, 1924 Council St.

n The family of deceased Marine Corporal Keaton Coffey of Boring, Ore., will be this year’s grand marshal of the 38th Annual Ross Hollywood Veterans Day parade at 9:45 a.m. Monday, Nov. 12 in Portland’s Hollywood District. This year will be the second annual "Blanket our Vets with Love" blanket drive for homeless vets. Parade viewers are asked to bring clean blankets to the parade, where they will be picked up by volunteers. The blankets will be given to JOIN, a non-profit that will distribute them to homeless vets. The parade will begin at the intersection of Northeast 40th Avenue and Tillamook Street and will end at the Ross Hollywood Flag Pole at Sandy Boulevard and Northeast 48th Avenue. n Skyline Memorial Park in Portland will host a scaled-down version of the Dignity Memorial Vietnam Wall Nov. 9-12 in honor of Veterans Day. During opening ceremonies Friday, Nov. 9, Beaverton resident and Vietnam War veteran Al Herrera will be honored with a Silver Star award. More information is available at
