Ceremonies set in Forest Grove and Hillsboro May 27

Western Washington County residents have at least three Memorial Day ceremonies to choose from.

At 11 a.m. in Forest View Cemetery, 1611 W. Pacific Ave. in Forest Grove, the local Oregon Army National Guard and American Legion Post #2 are co-sponsoring a ceremony featuring U.S. Sen. Jeff Merkley, along with choral music from Forest Grove High School students, an Honor Color Guard, a bagpiper, bugler, canon salute, memorial-wreath placement and words from Chaplain Erma Heisler.

James Craigg, adjutant of American Legion Post #2, will be the master of ceremonies. For more information, call Craigg at 503-357-3660.

At 12:30 p.m., the Forest Grove Fire Department will hold a ceremony at the base of the giant flagpole on Pacific Avenue. “It’s when we send the big flag up for the summer,” said Dave Nemeyer, the department’s public information officer.

The ceremony will include the national anthem, a trumpeter, a speech by Fire Chief Michael Kinkade and local Boy Scouts helping the firefighters association raise and lower the flags.

“It’s a chance for families to come out and see the true meaning of Memorial Day,” Nemeyer said. He suggests people park in the Safeway lot or on side streets.

“Last year we had an Air Force flyover,” Nemeyer said. “This year we don’t because of the sequester.”

The flags are cared for by the Forest Grove Firefighters Association with help from the Forest Grove Flag Fund.  To contribute, send a check to the association at 1919 Ash St., Forest Grove, OR 97116.  For more information email This email address is being protected from spambots. From 1 to 2:15 p.m., the Washington County Fair Complex will feature recognition of Purple Heart recipients, a prisoners-of-war ceremony, a 21-gun salute and a focus on Washington County’s role in World War II. The names of 129 soldiers killed in action during World War II will be read and local World War II veterans will share their stories. U.S. Rep. Suzanne Bonamici will give a keynote address.
