Saturday of the salmon

Nature lovers can volunteer to help Chinook, chum and coho salmon enjoy rejuvenated wetlands in Tillamook Bay. The Nature Conservancy will hold a work party from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, June 29, to remove barbed wire fencing and control the spread of invasive Canada thistle.

Salmon spawn in the five-river estuary around Tillamook, but pasture for dairy farming has overtaken wetland areas that historically absorbed tidal and flood waters. The Nature Conservancy recently acquired 67 acres near Kilchis River, part of the Tillamook estuary system.

Volunteers will hike through one or two miles of flat terrain, rain or shine. Lunch, snacks, waterbottle, and sunscreen are recommended, along with weather-appropriate clothing. Leather gloves and safety glasses are available from the Nature Conservancy. To register or for more information, call 503-802-8100 or email This email address is being protected from spambots. Take out the toxins

Pesticides, paints and other hazardous waste materials can stack up in summertime, and Metro’s Neighborhood Roundup program offers an outlet for household toxic trash. Metro holds collection events every week from early March through mid-November in area neighborhoods. Monthly garbage bills support the small-scale events.

Collection staff will visit the Forest Grove Transfer Station from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. June 29 and Neil Armstrong Middle School Oct. 26 to gather pool and spa chemicals, batteries, aerosol sprays, propane tanks, compact fluorescent light bulbs and other materials.

Most of the materials are recycled, and those that aren’t go to a hazardous-waste landfill. Metro will not accept containers larger than 5 gallons, and asks residents to limit each load to 35 gallons and use original containers when possible. Metro cannot return containers.

Metro’s permanent locations are open 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday on 61st Avenue in Portland and at its south facility in Oregon City.

For a full list of accepted materials, pick-up dates and more information, visit or call 503-234-3000.
