Forest Grove Relay for Life raises $64,000

Last weekend’s Relay for Life, a fundraiser for the American Cancer Society, garnered $64,000 in pledges — so far.

Event chairwoman Dawn Andresen said 29 teams and 300 individuals participated in the 2013 relay at Neil Armstrong Middle School, walking or running around the track for two days July 13 and 14.

“We have until Aug. 31 to raise money,” said Andresen. Last year’s relay brought in $92,000, she said.

Two notable things happened at this year’s relay, she added.

“A group from the Texas 4000 (said to be the longest annual charity bike ride in the world, from Austin, Texas to Anchorage, Alaska) came by to visit and talk with us,” Andresen said. “And the Forest Grove Fire Department came and walked in their gear, and helped us take down the event.”

Last chance for input

There are three more days to fill out the Ride Connection survey related to Forest Grove’s upcoming local-transit service, which is scheduled to start in September. The short survey, which is available through this Friday, July 19, seeks citizen input on the route, hours and name of the service. Go to and click on Community Transit Service Questionnaire under “Latest News,” or pick up a paper survey at City Hall, Maggie’s Buns, the Forest Grove City Library or many other places around town. So far, about 300 people have taken the survey, according to Lydia Corran, Ride Connection’s outreach specialist.

Viva, Vernonia!

A series of fundraising concerts for athletic facilities at Vernonia schools kick off Saturday, Aug. 3 at the rebuilt K-12 school building, 1000 Missouri Ave. Concerts will be open to the public that day at 2 p.m. and 6 p.m.

Hosted by the Vernonia High School Class of 1973, the event will serve as the highlight of those students’ 40th reunion. Devastating floods in 1996 and 2007 forced the closure of Vernonia schools, and in 2012 a new school opened on higher ground.

The fundraiser is also part of the 57th annual Vernonia Friendship Jamboree & Logging Show
