Numbers dropped during winter break but top 500 last week in January

GroveLink’s weekly ridership numbers finally cracked 600 the last week in January, when it recorded 641 pickups, with more than 100 each weekday.

“We are a little surprised at such a big number during a cold week in January,” said Lydia Corran, outreach specialist for Ride Connection, the Portland-based nonprofit which operates the local transit service. “How do we explain that? We think Forest Grove citizens just really needed another transit option.”

The service first topped 500 weekly riders during the third week of December. During the two weeks of winter break, that number dipped into the 200s — indicating how many trips may be school-related — then jumped back up above 500 when school restarted.

The heavy snow earlier this month also affected ridership numbers, when GroveLink had to cancel service for two whole days and use partial snow routes for three others.

But last week the weekly total was back over 500. Corran said two to four people a day still call Ride Connection asking about GroveLink — mainly wondering how to get from point A to point B or how to connect to TriMet’s 57 bus.

“There’s been virtually no negative feedback since we changed our schedule,” Corran said. The Nov. 18 changes added extra time between stops to account for route deviations that were taking more time than expected. Route deviations are specially requested pickups or dropoffs at people’s homes or other destinations that are no more than a half-mile off the main GroveLink route.

A couple new people have requested route deviations, Corran said.
