At last! Phase One begins for public-art project

The long-awaited public art project at the Forest Grove City Library will launch Phase One over Labor Day weekend, as planned.

World-renowned glass artist Ed Carpenter will install his glasswork beneath the skylight at the library’s entrance. After that, the project will still need woodwork and metalwork from local artists Greg Kriebel and Eric Canon before it is complete.

Preparations began last weekend, when people came to clean the skylight, and continued Tuesday with electricians scheduled to work on the artwork’s “enhanced lighting,” Library Director Colleen Winters said.

The colored glass itself will be delivered Friday, along with forklifts to help install it, and Carpenter will direct the process when the library is closed for the three-day holiday weekend.

It’s unclear when Kriebel and Canon will finish installing their own parts of the project. Kriebel’s piece includes 16 different panels “and each one has a different type of wood,” Winters said.
