The position was officially declared vacant Monday night. The hiring process is moving ahead.

The search for a new superintendent is expected to cost the Forest Grove School District $10,250 plus fees, which will likely total about $15,000, members of the School Board heard Monday night, Jan. 22.

At a public work session preceding the regular board meeting Monday, the board discussed the search process. During the regular session, the board voted to declare the superintendent position vacant effective July 1, 2018, a housekeeping item necessary to start the search process.

The application period will be open Feb. 16 to March 26. Candidates will be kept confidential and only the final candidate will be announced.

Consultants for the Oregon School Board Association (OSBA) and Next Up Leadership will lead the search for the school district's new top leader.

Board members expressed concerns about finding the right person to fill the shoes of former Superintendent Yvonne Curtis, who resigned in December preceding the release of a largely negative review. Some said they do not want to rush the process of replacing Curtis.

OSBA's Steve Kelley said he has already received about a dozen calls about the position, which has not yet been formally advertised.

"I don't think you're going to have problem finding the right candidate," he said.

Kelley expects the final selection to be made around May 1. After that, the contract specifics will be finalized.

OSBA representatives will stick around to help the new superintendent transition into the role and connect with the community, district staff and school board.

"They have to be able to work together," he said.

The board will be compiling a focus group to help in the search composed of administrators, community members, local leaders and school district staff members in the next two weeks. The public will have an opportunity to comment on superintendent qualifications at a Feb. 12 school board meeting, held at the school district administration building, 1728 Main St. in Forest Grove.

Community members are invited to participate in an online survey at an online survey (also in Spanish).
